Bridge Pose Yoga | Setu Bandha Sarvangasana – Steps and Benefits
Bridge Pose Yoga, also known as Setu Bandha Sarvangasana, is a reclining backbend that also opens the chest. In order to generate a bridge-like effect with the body and achieve the greatest stretch, this asana (position) for beginners lifts the hips and sternum while forcing the arms into the mat.
In Sanskrit, Setu means “Bridge”, Bandha means “Lock”, Sarva means “All”, and Anga means “Limb”. Bridge Pose highlights the idea of bridging communication and connecting with individuals and one’s own inner self, but yoga goes beyond the physical postures.
Benefits of Bridge Pose Yoga
Bridge Pose corrects posture and minimizes the negative effects of prolonged computer use and sitting. It can prevent slouching and kyphosis and decrease low back pain (abnormal curvature of the spine). Your back muscles, buttocks (glutes), thighs, and ankles are all strengthened as the pose gently stretches your tummy, chest, and the area around your shoulders.
